<IN-SHORT>
WDNet is a Wildcat file Network dedicated to the distribution of
shareware programs written expressly for WILDCAT BBS systems. These
files will be collected via the Wildcat HQ-BBS and directly from
the authors who create them. WDNet operates on the worldwide
FidoNet system and other networks using FidoNet Technical Standards
of communications.
<WHY>
The Freezing Point BBS has become a collection point for most all
the Wildcat 3rd party utilities. It seemed only logical to setup up
a file network based on the idea that these files should be readily
available and distributed throughout the Wildcat community. All of
this is now possible with WDNet! We will be in direct co-operation
with Mustangs own BBS and the Wildcat 3rd party utility authors.
Our goal is to allow the various Wildcat authors the ability to
send their new files to only ONE location and then have these files
automatically distributed to not only the HQ-BBS in Bakersfield CA,
but then to all the WDNet member BBS' around the world. Much of
this is still in the early stages of development and we will be
discussing our options with Mustang further. We will be making
alterations and additions to this as time goes on, but at this
point we are at least are getting something underway towards a
"better" way of getting these files out to you.
<HOW>
In order to get WDNet setup and going on your system, you will
need of course to be running Wildcat 2.xx - 3.xx, and WC File
Forward by Derek Koopowitz. The WDNet files are distributed along
with a .TIC file that will be processed by WC File Forward upon
arrival on your system. WCFLFWRD will then toss the description of
the file into your ALLFILES.DAT database and also move the file to
its proper directory as specified in your MAKEWILD settings. It is
not absolutely necessary to use WCFLFWRD, as you can also use other
similar programs such as TICK by Barry Geller. TICK will process
the incoming .TIC files and create a file containing the name,
size, date and description to use, but WILL not toss this
information directly into your ALLFILES.DAT and you must then
process them by hand or with WCFILE by Mustang. WCFLFWRD is
available for either Wildcat 2.xx or Wildcat 3.xx, you MUST be sure
to use the proper program as it WILL NOT work on the wrong version!
The latest release of Wildcat File Forward (WCFF) is v3.5 and is
FULLY compatibile with TICK/RAID and other .TIC processing programs.
In addition, it is completely Wildcat v3 tested and will easily add
any file received with a .TIC to your Wildcat v3 database.
<CONFIG FILE>
In order to facilitate utilities for both Wildcat & Mustang utils,
we have currently have three FILE AREAS available. They are listed
below:
WDNET3 (The area name for Wildcat 3.xx utilities)
WCDOOR (The area name for Wildcat DOORS and utils)
MUSTANG (Mustang Software Inc. Programs)
An example of the WCFF v3.5 configuration file for WC 3.xx would be
as follows:
ORIGZONE 1
NETNODE 282/85
WILDCAT C:\WC30
INFILES C:\DB\FILES
INMAIL C:\DB\FILES
OUTFILES C:\DB\WCTIC
OLDFILES C:\DB\FILES\OLD
FIDO
MAIL C:\DB\WCTICMSG
POSTTOFROM Ron Woods
POSTTOSUBJECT New files in the WDNet
POSTTONOTE These files are now available for F'Req-D/L
POSTTOORIGIN Home of WDNet! - (1:282/85) HST D/S
AREA E:\WC_3 WDNET3 24

This will probably vary slightly with the WCFLFWRD 2.xx version.
This will also closely resemble the AREA setting for those of you
using TICK instead of WCFF.
<MESSAGES AREA>
To keep each other informed and allow possible messages to be
entered from the authors themselves, we have started an echo thread
specifically for WDNet members. This will allow you to converse
with fellow sysops and the authors about possible problems, ideas
etc.. in regards to the files distributed in the WDNetwork! The
echo tag name for this conference should be set in your AREAS.BBS
file as follows:
WDNET_*PROWL* (Spelling must be EXACT!)
You are REQUIRED to maintain this message area on your system
while a member of the WDNetwork! It must ONLY be available to the
sysop and no other security level. This area is not open to the
public and can not be exported to non WDNetwork systems or sysops.
This conference is for subjects related to the WDNetwork and the
files distributed therein. Authors and sysops may converse in this
forum about possible bugs, problems, ideas or a pat on the back!
<WHEN>
If you have taken on the responsibility of an active HUB for the
WDNetwork, we ask that you be willing to poll The Freezing Point at
least twice a week. This should be sufficient and allow you to keep
your phone bills at a minimum. Keep in mind that we do operate with
a U.S. Robotics Dual Standard and that transfer times should go
quickly if you happen to operate at 9600 or higher. We may decide
to extend the Zone Mail hour for another hour and designate this
time for the SDNet transfer hour. This will depend on the amount of
traffic that is received in the oncoming months.
<WHAT DOES IT COST>
NOTHING! except for your phone calls. WDNet is a completely FREE
volunteer Network and only exists for the benefit of Wildcat Sysops
and the authors who create Wildcat utilities.
<WHO>
If you have any questions or want to get set up on the WDNetwork
and become a HUB or NODE for your area please contact Ron Woods
(info given below) or another system located in the WDNETLOC.LST.
At the time of this writing, we are looking for sysops who would
like to be a HUB for WDNet in their state or region. Ideally we
need at least one in each state to distribute the files to points
under your system.
<COMMENTS>
Your thoughts and comments are always welcome and very much
appreciated. We would like to see the WDNetwork grow and become a
valuable tool to Wildcat sysops. In order for this to happen, we
NEED your ideas and input. Any concerns, ideas or questions may be
forwarded to the following:
